Getting Involved - Business
Two people testing a water sample

Cleaner production technology and better knowledge about the causes of pollution have made it far easier to be a lean and green commercial operator.

Many companies have seen the value of getting involved in water quality improvement programs as good corporate citizens, or sometimes out of unashamed self interest.

Ways that business can be involved in Waterwatch are:

  • Sponsoring a local group with test equipment

  • Sponsoring other activities by local Waterwatch groups

  • Carrying out your own water quality monitoring or stream restoration project

  • Acting as a case study of best practice (ie showing off your good work!)

  • Complying with or exceeding the relevant environmental standards for your industry

For more information on getting involved in Waterwatch, contact the NSW Waterwatch Facilitator on water.watch@dnr.nsw.gov.au, or
phone 02 9895 7402.

If you would like more information on cleaner industry, the NSW Environment Protection Authority has excellent resource material for a range of industries at www.epa.nsw.gov.au, or contact the NSW EPA information line on 131 555.

Case Study

Lever Rexona and Waterwatch

Lever Rexona are a large multi national corporation with a headquarters and factory operation in a beautiful bushland setting in North Rocks, a north western suburb of Sydney. Following several incidents affecting the water quality of Darling Mills Creek in the early 1990's, the company sponsored the local Streamwatch group at Muirfield High School with equipment and chemicals to carry out ongoing water quality monitoring.

The students took to the task enthusiastically and reported any incidents immediately to the contact at Lever Rexona. Over time, the incidents became less frequent, and eventually non existent, and Darling Mills Creek remains one of the cleanest urban creeks in the Sydney metropolitan area. Lever Rexona went on to win awards for its treatment of stormwater runoff through a filter system and constructed wetland, and the staff of the company get to enjoy the benefits of working in a beautiful bushland setting.

The students of Muirfield High School went on to win 5 Dolphin Awards over several years, the highest award of the NSW Waterwatch program.

If you know of a good example of industry working to improve water quality, please forward the relevant information to the NSW Waterwatch Facilitator on the above numbers.
